August 2024

President's Message

July was a pretty quiet month for our club with summer in full swing. But I am excited about one thing we accomplished with Paula and Tom stepping up to lead us next year. But we still have a lot more to do which is why we decided to pause our weekly guest speakers for the next few months to focus on building relationships and working together to make our club even stronger. The next big task in front of us will be at Bedford Day and once again I'm grateful to Tom Pinney for leading this effort.  We still have a few weeks between now and then so I look forward to seeing many of you at our next evening meeting on August 6th at the Great Wall and hopefully the weather will cool off so we can keep up our in-person meetings. In the meantime enjoy your last month of summer because it's going to be a busy and exciting fall.

Bedford Day is Coming!

Bedford Day 2024 is on Saturday, September 21. We will have two booths together; one to showcase Rotary projects including Interact and the other selling pizza from Ken’s Deli (Thanks Marc!), drinks and snacks. We are very excited to be partnering with Ken’s for two reasons. 1. The location. Pizza runs will be easier this year due to the proximity of Ken’s to the Fair. 2. The cost that they are charging us. They are providing the lowest price we’ve had since purchasing the pizzas.

A Volunteer Sign-Up Genius will be created (Thanks Dr. Ryan!) as we get a little closer to the event. We will need volunteers for both booths to help with set-up (8am-10am starting at the storage area at 7:30am), during the Fair (10am-2pm) and take-down (2pm until finished with delivery back to the storage area).

As this is historically one of our larger fundraising events and a great opportunity for community visibility and outreach, please make every effort to volunteer where possible. Every bit helps.

Please reach out to Tom Pinney with any questions.

The Story Behind The Minuteman District Banner

Our story starts on April 19, 1775 with the battle of Concord. And meanders through the centuries until July 23, 2024.

Following the battle of Concord (also known as the Battle of the Old North Bridge), not much was done to commemorate the battle until 1825 when $500 was appropriated as a commission to commemorate it. Danial Chester French, who lived in Concord, wound up with the commission and after numerous and confusing changes the final monument was unveiled in 1875. The statue itself is constructed of bronze (it was originally supposed to be stone but the Federal Government gave the town 10 Civil War Cannons – rumor has it they may have been Confederate cannons – because the town of Concord could not afford to buy the bronze to make the statues casting and the monument was completed.

Weed Warriors in Action!
Friday morning (July 28th) a band of weed warriors took to the pollinator garden to clean up the area and to remove any plants that were growing where they weren't supposed to be. Weeding is pretty straightforward as we have flags placed wherever a plant is supposed to be. This handy method allowed even the most novice gardeners to feel confident in what they were doing!
We did notice a few plants that had been nibbled (a lot) by animals, most likely deer and we will probably have to figure out a way to protect them in future years when they start growing. The entire clean-up took just over 30 minutes. A big thank you to our weeders - Judi, Ralph, Joe, Christine P, Tom, and Paula.

Check out the completed job!
