It's nearly impossible for me to believe this is my last message to you as President. Two years has seemed like forever, but passed in a flash at the same time. I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for the enthusiasm and support you’ve shown me as I learned on the job—it has made all the difference! It’s been a true privilege to lead this incredible Club, and I’m deeply thankful for the friendships, shared accomplishments, and unwavering dedication of each of you and especially to Ralph for being such an inspiring mentor and teammate. Please join us on June 24 for my final meeting as President, and don’t miss the installation on July 8as we kick off Paula and Tom’s co-presidency and celebrate our remarkable achievement of being named Club of the Year by the District! I’m proud of all we’ve done together and excited for what’s to come in the capable hands of our new leadership team.

Werner Salinger was born in Berlin, Germany, on 5 April, 1932. Ten months later Adolph Hitler came to power, appointed by then German President Hindenburg. Salinger experienced Kristallnacht from the central Berlin apartment that also housed his orthodontist (one of the world’s first) mother’s dental practice.
Salinger has a BA in political science from Goddard College. He is a nine year veteran of the USAF, stationed in Germany for 3.5 years at the height of the Cold War as a USAF Intelligence officer, (NCO), interrogating German POW’s returning from the Soviet Union and defectors from countries east of the Iron Curtain. He is married to the daughter of a German soldier who served in Hitler’s Nazi army and they have four very adult children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
On Wednesday, May 21st, the Lexington High School Track was filled with laughter, energy, and inspiration as students, families, educators, and community members came together for the annual LABBB Collaborative Special Olympics. Representing Lexington, Arlington, Burlington, Bedford, Belmont, and Watertown, the event brought together 250 athletes and more than 350 volunteers, friends, and family members to celebrate ability, perseverance, and unity.
On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, six dedicated members of the Rotary Club of Bedford proudly participated in Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell’s 17th Annual Women Build Week. This inspiring initiative, held from May 3–9, brought together women from all walks of life to lend their strength and skills toward creating safe, affordable housing for local families in need.
Our team provided critical women-power to help construct two new condominiums at the 70 Boston Road site in Westford, a historic 1865 barn that is being transformed into two net-zero, solar-ready homes. Each unit will include three bedrooms and two bathrooms, ultimately housing approximately ten individuals. During this stage of construction, our members worked on framing the bedroom walls—an essential step in bringing these homes closer to completion.
Well, here we are, Spring 2025. Is gardening all about weeds? Seems like it. If you had told me we would still have a pollinator garden, I would have told you you're nuts. But here we are, a few years after we did the initial planting, weeding! Our fearless lead gardener (Paula) has us weeding the healthy remaining plants and in general, sprucing up the whole pollinator garden. Under Paula’s very capable leadership weeds were flying, wood chips and more cardboard boxes were ripped apart, all tape removed (that was my assigned job – Yea Bob) spread out on the ground making the overall garden wider (we added a path between the actual pollinator garden and the weeds), and then covering the whole place with more woodchips graciously provided by Public Works,
On May 1, from 5 to 7 PM, a group of dedicated volunteers from the Bedford Science Center, including Ralph, Al, Victor, and several others, gathered at the Lane School's Science Center room for critical life-saving training. Assisting them were two Bedford EMT staff members from the Fire Department—one of whom, in a full-circle moment, was once a student of Ralph’s when he taught fifth grade at the former Bedford Center School, now the site of the Council on Aging.
Each May, Rotary International celebrates Youth Service Month, recognizing the power and potential of young people around the world. At the Rotary Club of Bedford, youth service is more than a theme—it’s a year-round commitment to helping young people grow as leaders, learners, and citizens.
