"How to write a book when you don't know where to start."
Oct 08, 2024 12:30 PM
"I used to feel trapped in my life, always working and never seeing my kids. The worst part was that I didn't see a way out. Do you know that feeling of being trapped in your own life?

In 2002, our Club dedicated the 9/11 Memorial at Springs Brook Park.
As the memorial's creator, the Club has stewardship responsibility for its maintenance, working in partnership with the Town.
On Saturday, October 12th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., members of the 9/11 Memorial Stewardship Team will perform some relatively minor cleanup chores (described below).
In the event of a weather cancellation, the Rain Date is the following Saturday, October 19th, at the same time.
We need and invite you to help.
The planned cleanup primarily involves raking and piling the debris from cutting down weeds and vines around the area's perimeter. It's suggested that you bring gloves and a rake (if you can). Jackets, hats, and insect repellent are your choice. If anyone has anything else they think might be helpful, please let me know.
With enough help, it shouldn't take too long to complete.

Bedford Science Center
Oct 15, 2024 1:00 PM
Erin and other volunteers have been working to establish the Bedford Science Center. Starting three years ago they created a “science corner” in the lobby of Lane School. Facilities put in some new outlets, fixed all the lights in the display cabinets, and a volunteer made heavy-duty shelves. Someone donated a table, the old superintendent brought in a huge wasp nest, and voila!: the science corner was born. It was loved by children so much that they have been able to expand to an entire classroom and have christened this the Bedford Science Center. While this has been growing they are working on the formation of the nonprofit called Bedford Community Science. This will be a 501c3 in town, with the goal of bringing exciting hands-on science events and activities to everyone aged 3-103. The organization has been incubating under the arm of the BEST PTO and once its 501c3 designation is obtained it will be a spin-off (like Frazier from Cheers!) |

Participatory budgeting - what is it and why is it relevant to Bedford Rotary?
Oct 22, 2024 12:30 PM
NOTE: This meeting will be held in The Residence, 240 South Rd, Bedford, MA
In the Spring of '24 at Tufts, with group members in her Solidarity Economics course, Katherine participated in a semester-long project supporting a non-profit's evaluation of Boston's pilot Participatory Budgeting process.
Participatory budgeting (PB) is a democratic process in which community members decide how to spend part of a public budget. It gives people real power over real money- because community members are experts!
So...why is this relevant to Bedford Rotary you ask? We are all individuals living in a community with thoughts and ideas on ways to improve it. The trick is, that even stellar local governments can't read our minds on how we'd like our budgets spent, and town meetings only reach a small amount of the total population. PB is spreading quickly; processes have popped up in cities and towns like Lexington, Cambridge, Sommerville, and more.
You'll have an opportunity to understand the driving goals behind the movement, the process basics on how community input is collected, and get to discuss the sorts of improvements you would advocate for in your home town.
