At a celebratory lunch meeting on May 5, the Rotary Club of Bedford was proud to honor Past District Governor Ralph Hammond with two of the highest distinctions Rotary International bestows — capping more than four decades of extraordinary service to our community and the world.

The occasion brought together not only Ralph's fellow club members, but a gathering of distinguished regional leaders: District Governor Johnny Ahern, who delivered the award presentation; District Governor Elect Penny Hamel; and Past District Governor Joyce Graff. Their presence was a testament to the deep respect Ralph has earned across the Rotary community.

The first honor, the Avenues of Service Award, recognizes Rotarians who have made a sustained, meaningful impact across all five of Rotary's core areas: Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, International Service, and Youth Service. It is a rare distinction — and Ralph has embodied every one of those avenues.

Internationally, Ralph led teacher training programs in both Nepal and the Philippines, making multiple trips to ensure the programs took lasting root, and founded a Rotary club abroad. Closer to home, he has inspired the next generation through filmmaking and community service projects at the local Science Center, and spent years volunteering at the VA Hospital — including organizing trips to baseball games for wheelchair-bound patients. His Rotary leadership has spanned the full spectrum, from Club Co-President and Executive Secretary to District Grant Subcommittee Chair and District Governor.

The second and even rarer distinction is Rotary International's Service Above Self Award — the organization's single highest individual honor. Rotary International has more than 1.2 million members in clubs around the globe. This year, just 132 of them were selected to receive this award. Ralph Hammond is one of them.

Club member Victor, who nominated Ralph for the award, described a life of service that extends far beyond Rotary. As a teacher, Ralph spearheaded efforts to bring internet access to every classroom in his school and introduced computer education to elementary students. He served on multiple town committees for many years, including Arbor Resources, Bicycle Advisory, Trails, and Transportation Advisory, and served as both a River Steward and a historical house trustee.

Perhaps most strikingly, Ralph rode more than 100 miles each year in the Pan-Mass Challenge, a grueling cycling fundraiser for cancer research,  including one year while he himself was undergoing chemotherapy. That quiet, determined act of giving while facing his own health challenges speaks volumes about who Ralph Hammond is.
