Rotary Club of Bedford’s Community Dinner on Wednesday, February 25 proved once again that sharing a meal can be a powerful way to build connection and strengthen community. Held in the welcoming Upper Fellowship Hall at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, the evening embodied the spirit captured so simply in the dinner’s tagline: “Sharing a meal, building community.” More than 60 residents—families with young children, teenagers, older adults, and longtime Bedford neighbors—gathered around tables to enjoy a hearty meal and lively conversation. The dinners, offered free of charge, reflect Rotary’s commitment to fostering inclusion and belonging in Bedford.
The importance of these gatherings is underscored by a growing public health concern. In May 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called loneliness a public health epidemic. Across Massachusetts, approximately 35% of older adults report depression, and social isolation remains elevated among residents 65 and older. Attendee Jean Bushnell described the February dinner as heartwarming, noting the joy of conversations that ranged from downsizing and retirement to intergenerational relationships and veterans’ matters. It was an evening filled with laughter, storytelling, and new friendships.
Selectboard member Paul Mortenson echoed that sentiment: “We totally enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to going to the next one. I often say the best part of being a SelectBoard member is meeting new people, and I’m really sincere about that, and that dinner delivered in that regard. I met loads of new people, all of whom were great to meet. I’m impressed by the Rotary.”
His remarks capture what many attendees felt: the dinner wasn’t just about food—it was about connection.
The Rotary Club of Bedford continues to demonstrate how simple, intentional acts—like offering a free, hearty meal—can address deeper community needs. In a time when loneliness affects people of all ages, these monthly dinners are more than an event on the calendar; they are a lifeline of warmth, conversation, and belonging.
